Stones: The Weight We Carry – The Stone of Sin
Icebreaker: What is the heaviest thing you remember ever lifting?
Accused: John 8:1-11
- What were the accusations against the woman? Did she offer any defense?
- What would have been the easiest way for Jesus to answer this question and why is it the easy way out?
- What did Jesus DO instead of providing an immediate answer?
- What did Jesus write in the dirt? (We don’t know, but some have guessed that it was sins that the Pharisees had committed. I have enjoyed that guess!)
- In our lives, why do you think we often serve as our own accuser?
- How does this “accusation thinking” stop people from being used by God?
Advocate:
- Even though the woman was guilty, how does Jesus handle the situatin with her? (Go and sin no more)
- Read 1John 2:1-2, John 3:17, Romans 8:1 8 What do you think WE as sinners can do to atone for our past sins and make them go away?
- If Jesus was “just our lawyer” what could He do to plead our case to God?
- Why is Jesus more than just a lawyer for us?
- What are both the Woman and we Christians (in 1 John verses) told to do or not do?
- How do you handle the desire to be perfect with the reality of failing?
